Through this special collaboration with artist Garvin Sierra, we’re introducing our new solutions journalism series: “Así es como nos quedamos” (in English, “This is how we stay”). This piece is a limited edition release of 100 copies signed by the artist and designed in collaboration with 9 Millones.

Why serigraphy (Screen Printing)? Puerto Rican artists have a long history of using screen printing to communicate, express and amplify the People’s voice. With this piece, we recognize the cultural and artistic legacy of those artists whose work serve as historical references of the past and present.

Detailed description: Plantains have been used in Puerto Rican art as a symbol of everyday life and as a symbol of being from Puerto Rico with the phrase “mancha de plátano”. This phrase talks about a birthmark that many Puerto Ricans have and symbolizes belonging. The bananas have words that represent different strategies for remaining in Puerto Rico.
