Why serigraphy Screen Printing?

Puerto Rican artists have a long history of using screen printing to communicate, express and amplify the People’s voice. With this piece, we recognize the cultural and artistic legacy of those artists whose work serve as historical references of the past and present.
Plantains have been used in Puerto Rican art as a symbol of everyday life and as a symbol of being from Puerto Rico with the phrase “mancha de plátano”. This phrase talks about a birthmark that many Puerto Ricans have and symbolizes belonging. The bananas have words that represent different strategies for remaining in Puerto Rico.

Meet the artist
Garvin Sierra Vega (Ponce, Puerto Rico, 1977) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice encompasses graphic design, sculpture, installation, set design, and urban intervention. His work is inspired by situations experienced while living in Puerto Rico as a colony: fueled by the impact of dependency on inefficient governments and political impositions. Through his work, he seeks to capture the social and political injustices of the country, offering the viewer a critical, direct, and playful visual synthesis. His artistic productions address the past, present, and future of the island, with the theme of colonialism as its central axis. Each work offers multiple levels of interpretation – never imposes a single meaning, but rather invites the viewer to understand its content based on their own experiences. His work has been exhibited internationally in countries such as Argentina, Colombia, Japan, Slovenia, Mexico, Portugal, Cuba, Spain, Italy, and the United States. Some pieces are are also part of institutional collections at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico (MAC), the Museum of Art of Puerto Rico (MAPR), the Museum of History and Anthropology of the UPR (MHAA), Casa de las Américas in Havana, Cuba, the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
